An accomplished jazz musician before became an artist, Richard was born in Torquay and his native Devon has been a lasting influence on his painting, particularly scenes of its coast, moors and rivers. Perhaps because of his love of jazz with its elements of improvisation Richard is an intuitive artist; his vividly coloured watercolours always retaining a very spontaneous feeling of place, mood and season.
A long standing member of The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts (SWAC) his skill in watercolour has recently been recognised with his election to membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
